Home-brew it your way

Shop sells all you'll need for fun, flavorful hobby

BYOB doesn't mean the usual at Gary Wilder's store. Instead of "Bring Your Own Bottle," it stands for for Brew Your Own Brew, the name of his shop. No matter what your poison - from suds to soda - Wilder sells the home-brewing supplies to make it yourself. And believe it or not, Wilder says home brewing isn't that hard. "If you can boil water for 60 minutes, you can make beer," Wilder said. The sweet, subtly spicy smell of root beer permeates his small store. A giant refrigerator houses different hops and yeast strains as well as soda extracts like cola and cherry. Stainless steel shelves are lined with dozens of different beer kits, cheese-making kits and fruit bases to make sweet wines. You can also find beer-bread mixes and sourdough starters, along with conversion kits to turn a refrigerator into a "keggerator." Yup, that's right - a keggerator. Wilder opened Brew Your Own Brew in 1996 after the heavy-equipment plant he worked for closed. A home brewer for years, he decided to turn his hobby into a profession. Along the way, he's converted many people from canned beer. "We've got customers who say, 'This (home-brew) is so good, I'm never going back to commercial beer,' '' said Wilder, whose own beer and prickly pear wine have won several awards.

"You can make them as strong or as light as you want." Brew Your Own Brew offers basic kits that are as simple as cake mixes, as well as more advanced ones. "You can even make your own malt extract, but that's an all-day process," said Wilder, a bona fide brewer with a certificate from the American Brewers Guild. Many parents who are interested in brewing buy the soda-making stuff so they can share their hobby with their kids, he said. "(Home brewing) is the fastest-growing hobby in America," said Wilder, who averages two new customers a day. Count William Steudler among those who have recently discovered the joy of brewing. The engineer started with a "cheapo Mr. Beer kit," a Christmas gift from his mother. Now his beers and meads are winning medals in national competitions. "Being an engineer, I try to engineer the perfect beer," he said. "That's my quest." And one that takes a lot of sudsy supplies. A loyal customer for two years, Steudler said he visits Brew Your Own Brew at least once a week and has his friends hooked on his home-brew. "It's a lot of fun," he said. "It's a fun hobby." Testimonials
Thanks Gary. Also, I waned you to know that I really appreciated your help over the phone on 11-19. I called from oklahoma on you 800 number. I know my question probably seemed silly but you never let me know it. And, you made me feel really comfortable asking for help from you or your staff. My sister will be using your firm as well when she begins her winemaking experience next year. My hat is off to you, your "right hand" man (Dan?) who helped us when we were in Tucson. Great job! Can't wait for my order. And, Dan was right, I can't go wrong working with byob...best prices, best service, best shipping...all things good! Thanks, Patti
